Getting Your New Appliances Connected

A neighbor bought a fancy new dishwasher during Black Friday. Got it delivered but the installer would not connect it because her shutoff valve was stuck. She called us, we replaced the valve and connected everything. Took about 30 minutes but she could not have used her new dishwasher without it. Appliance hookups seem simple but details matter. Wrong connections cause leaks, water damage, or poor appliance performance.

My local plumber has provided me excellent service two times! Once fixing my backyard sump pump. And then the second time helping clear a difficult clog in the courtyard. Even came out in the rain! Very nice and respectful employees who communicate well!

We have used My Local Plumber for years and they continue to provide excellent plumbing services. Today, we had them out to handle a backed up kitchen sink drain. The technicians were friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. Thank you so much!

Very impressed with the professionalism of Ish and his partner. I had a highly-unusual problem, they were able to locate the issue, brainstorm to find a solution, and ultimately fixed the issue without increasing the bill. I will definitely use them in the future.

Flush Systems

Connect the hot water supply line from under the sink.

Install a drain connection to the sink drain or disposal.

Level the unit and secure it to the countertop.

Electrical connection, hardwired or plug.

Test for leaks and proper drainage.

An air gap or high loop prevents backflow.

Washing Machine Connections

Hot and cold supply lines need proper shut-offs.

Drain into the standpipe with proper height and P-trap.

Level the machine so it does not walk during the spin cycle.

Proper hoses matter, braided stainless steel hoses are much better than rubber.

Leave space for vibration, as washers move during operation.

Refrigerator Water Lines

Run the supply line from the nearest cold water source.

Use quality materials like copper or braided stainless steel. No cheap plastic.

Saddle valves are code violations now. We use proper tee connections.

Test for leaks thoroughly. Hidden fridge leaks cause major damage.

Common Problems We Fix

  • Leaking connections
    Improperly tightened or wrong fittings
  • No shutoff valves
Appliances need dedicated shut-offs for service
  • Wrong hose types
    Cheap hoses fail prematurely
  • Improper drainage
Dishwasher or washer drains that back up or leak
  • Undersized supply lines
    Restricts flow and affects performance
  • Missing air gaps
Required on dishwashers in many areas

Supply Line Quality

Do not cheap out on supply lines. Braided stainless steel hoses are worth the extra cost.

Rubber hoses crack and burst. We have seen too many flooded homes from failed hoses.

Replace hoses every five years, even if they look fine. Preventative maintenance matters.

Shutoff Valves

Every appliance should have accessible shut-off valves.

This makes maintenance and repairs much easier.

We install quality ball valves that actually shut off when needed.

Dishwasher Air Gaps

These prevent sink water from siphoning back into the dishwasher.

Required by code in many areas. That chrome fitting on your sink deck.

If yours is missing or leaking, we fix it properly.

Disposal Installation

Mount properly to the opening with a gasket seal.

Electrical connection following code.

Proper drain connections that do not leak.

Test that it grinds and drains correctly.

Knockouts removed if connecting a dishwasher drain.

Water Heater Hookups

Gas line connection by a licensed plumber only.

Proper venting per code requirements.

Temperature and pressure relief valve and drain pan.

Expansion tank if required by local code.

Supply lines with shutoff valves.

Electrical connections for power vent or electric units.

Permits and Codes

Some appliance installations require permits, water heaters especially.

Gas connections always require permits and inspection.

We handle the paperwork and ensure code compliance.

Builder Grade vs Quality

Builder-grade appliance connections often use the cheapest materials.

Upgrading to quality shutoff valves and supply lines is a smart move.

Costs a bit more now but prevents expensive problems later.

Ice Maker Lines

These small lines are common leak sources.

Use quality materials and proper connections.

Install a shutoff valve so you can turn off the water when the ice maker acts up.

Whole House Water Treatment

Water softeners, filtration systems, and conditioners need proper connections.

Bypass valves for maintenance.

Drain connections for backwash cycles.

Electrical connections for automated systems.

New Construction vs Retrofit

New construction appliance hookups are easier since walls are open and access is simple.

Retrofit work in existing homes requires working around cabinets and finished surfaces.

Both are doable, retrofit just takes more time and care.

Costs

Simple appliance hookup, like a dishwasher or washing machine, usually runs $100 to $200.

More complex installations with new supply lines or electrical work cost more.

Water heaters are a separate category, typically $500 to $1000 or more installed.

Get quotes upfront so there are no surprises.

Delivery Day Coordination

Delivery crews often will not connect appliances if there is any issue.

Missing shutoffs, wrong connections, or code problems mean they leave.

Have us come out before delivery if you are unsure everything is ready.

Or schedule us after delivery to handle all connections.

Warranty Protection

Some appliance warranties require professional installation.

Keep receipts and documentation.

Improper DIY installation can void warranties.

Testing and Verification

After connecting any appliance, we test thoroughly.

Run cycles, check for leaks, and verify proper operation.

It is better to find problems immediately than discover leaks later.
