The Classic Fix For Clogged Drains
I was at a friend’s house when his kitchen sink backed up mid-party. I grabbed my snake from the truck and cleared it in ten minutes. Bunch of grease and food debris. He’d been dumping everything down there for months. Simple snaking fixed it but I told him to change his habits or it will just clog again.
Drain snaking, also called drain augering, is the bread and butter of drain cleaning. Not glamorous but effective for most clogs.

What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Us
How Drain Snakes Work
A drain snake is basically a long, flexible metal cable with an auger or cutting head on the end.
We feed it down your drain until it hits the clog. Then rotate the cable so the head breaks up or grabs the blockage.
Pull it back out along with whatever was clogging your drain. Sometimes it’s gross, but it’s always satisfying when it clears.
Types of Snakes
- Hand snakes
Manual crank operation. Good for small clogs near the drain. Most homeowners have these. - Power snakes
Electric motor spins the cable. Way more power than hand cranking. We use these for most jobs. - Drum augers
Cable comes off a drum. Good for shorter runs like sink and tub drains. - Sectional snakes
Cable comes in sections that attach together. Can reach 100 feet or more for sewer lines.
When To Snake A Drain
- Slow draining
Water goes down eventually but takes forever. - Complete blockage
Nothing drains at all. - Recurring clogs
Same drain keeps clogging even after plunging. - Multiple drains affected
Points to a clog in the main drain line. - Foul odors
Buildup in pipes creates smells. - Gurgling sounds
Air trapped by partial clogs causes gurgling.
What We Can Clear
- Hair clogs
Bathroom drains are full of hair. The most common clog we see. - Grease buildup
Kitchen drains get layers of hardened grease. - Soap scum
Combines with hair and other debris. - Food debris
Even without disposals, food gets into drains. - Foreign objects
Toys, jewelry, and items that should not be there. Sometimes we can retrieve them. - Tree roots
In sewer lines, roots grow in through joints. Cutting heads clears them out.
The Snaking Process
First, we locate the best access point. Usually, the drain itself, but sometimes a cleanout or vent access works better.
Feed the cable down slowly while running water. Water helps lubricate and flush debris.
When we hit the clog, work the cable back and forth to break through.
Once broken, flush thoroughly with water to clear remaining debris.
For tough clogs, multiple passes with different cutting heads may be needed.
Limitations of Snaking
Snaking works for most clogs but not everything.
- Collapsed pipes
If the pipe structure failed, snaking will not fix it. - Severe scale buildup
Years of mineral deposits may need hydro jetting instead. - Broken pipes
Snakes can pass through breaks but will not repair them. - Bellied pipes
Sags in the line where debris collects. Snaking gives temporary relief but clogs return.
For these situations, camera inspection shows what is really going on.
Snaking vs Hydro Jetting
Snaking pokes a hole through clogs. Hydro jetting blasts them away completely.
For recurring clogs or heavy buildup, jetting is the better long-term solution. More expensive but more thorough.
Snaking costs less and works well for simple clogs that do not keep coming back.
DIY Snaking
You can buy basic snakes and try yourself. Sometimes it works, sometimes it makes things worse.
It is easy to damage pipes if you do not know what you are doing. The cable can poke through old pipes or scratch new ones.
Chemical cleaners before snaking are dangerous. Chemicals can splash back while snaking.
For deep clogs or main lines, call us. Our equipment is better than rental machines.
Preventing Clogs
- Use drain screens
Catch hair and debris before it goes down. - No grease down kitchen drains
Let it cool and throw it away. - Run hot water after dishes
Helps grease keep moving. - Regular maintenance
Periodic professional cleaning prevents major clogs. - Watch what you flush
Toilets are not trash cans.
Cost of Drain Snaking
Basic drain snaking usually runs $100 to $200 for simple clogs.
Main line snaking typically costs $150 to $300 depending on access and difficulty.
After-hours emergency service costs more but is sometimes unavoidable.
Much cheaper than letting clogs cause backups and water damage.
When Snaking Isn't Enough
If we snake your drain and it clogs again quickly, something else is wrong.
Camera inspection may show the need for:
- Hydro jetting for heavy buildup
- Pipe repair for damage
- Root treatment for tree intrusion
- Pipe replacement if the line is beyond repair
Frequency of Snaking
How often depends on your situation. Some homes never need it. Others need annual maintenance.
Older homes with aging pipes often need periodic cleaning.
Large families generate more drain usage and debris.
Trees near sewer lines mean regular root clearing.
Emergency Situations
Sewage backing up into your home is an emergency and needs immediate service.
Standing water in basements from main line backups requires quick attention.
We respond fast because damage escalates quickly.
Maintenance Plans
Some customers choose annual maintenance to clean drains before problems start.
This costs less than emergency service and prevents inconvenient backups.
A good option if you have recurring drain issues.
