Upgrading From That Builder Grade Shower
When my sister finally replaced her builder’s special shower after 15 years, she couldn’t believe what she’d been missing. That cheap plastic surround had started cracking, the showerhead barely produced any pressure, and the valve was constantly either too hot or too cold.
Installing a new shower is one of those home improvements that makes a real difference in your daily life. You use it every day, so why not have something that works right and looks good?

What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Us
Types of Showers We Install
- Prefab shower kits
These are your fiberglass or acrylic one-piece units. They’re affordable, quick to install, and pretty durable. Good choice if you’re on a budget or just need something functional. - Tile showers
Custom tile work looks amazing and lasts forever if done right. You can pick whatever style you want: subway tile, natural stone, or glass tile. Takes longer and costs more but the result is worth it. - Walk-in showers
These are getting popular, especially with folks who are thinking ahead about aging in place. No curb to step over, often includes a bench. Very practical. - Tub and shower combos
Still popular in main bathrooms, especially if you’ve got kids. We install the whole unit or convert an existing tub.
What Goes Into a Shower Installation
This isn’t just swapping out the old for the new. We gotta check your plumbing, make sure your drain is positioned right, verify the water supply lines are good, and sometimes reinforce walls or floor joists.
Around Farmers Branch, a lot of homes have plumbing that’s outdated. If we’re already tearing things out, it’s smart to update the valve to a pressure-balancing or thermostatic one. These keep the temperature consistent even when someone flushes a toilet or starts the dishwasher.
We also waterproof everything properly. Can’t tell you how many shower leaks I’ve seen because somebody skipped the waterproofing membrane. Water gets behind the tile or surround and rots out the studs and subfloor. Big expensive mess.
Planning Your New Shower
Before installation, think about what bothers you about your current shower:
- Is the space too small? Maybe we can push out a wall or convert a tub to a larger shower.
- Do you hate cleaning grout lines? Consider large-format tiles or solid surface panels.
- Want better water pressure? We can install a new showerhead and make sure your valve and supply lines aren’t restricting flow.
- Need grab bars for safety? We’ll block the walls so bars can be mounted securely.
- Want multiple showerheads or a rain head? Your plumbing might need some upgrades to handle the flow.
Timeline and What To Expect
A basic shower swap, taking out one prefab and putting in another, usually takes a day or two. Custom tile showers take longer, usually 3 to 5 days, depending on size and complexity.
Your bathroom’s gonna be out of commission during the work. If it’s your only bathroom, plan to use a friend’s place or gym for showers. We try to work efficiently but we also can’t rush things like waterproofing or grout curing.
There will be dust and noise. We’ll try to contain the mess, but demo work is messy by nature. We clean up at the end of each day, though.
Common Mistakes People Make
- Choosing tile based on looks alone without thinking about maintenance, some tiles show every water spot.
- Going too small on the shower pan, standard 32×32 pans are cramped. 36×48 or bigger is way more comfortable.
- Skimping on the valve, a cheap valve causes temperature problems. Spend a bit more for quality.
- Not planning for storage, add niches for shampoo bottles. Those corner caddies that hang are annoying.
- Forgetting about lighting, showers need good lighting. Plan for a proper fixture.
Making Your Investment Last
Once your new showers are installed, take care of them. Wipe down tile after use to prevent soap scum buildup. Seal grout every year or two. Fix any caulking cracks right away before water gets in. Clean your showerhead periodically to remove mineral deposits.
A well-installed shower should last 20 to 30 years easy. Tile showers last even longer if maintained right.
